Seed planting Press seed into potting mix so half the seed is covered. Place in shady area and water twice a week with fine mist. Germination takes about 4-6 weeks. Leave in seed tray or pot for two years. First flowers appear in 5 years. Be patient! Seedling Care Soil drench or foliar feed with liquid seaweed and fish 4 times a year. Fertilise lightly with Dynamic Lifter Plus in spring and summer. Notes
Seedlings will not flower exactly like the parent plant. Seeds from a yellow clivia will be about 60% yellow (the base of the foliage is green) and 40% pastel orange and orange (the base of the foliage is maroon). The quality and quantity of flowers improves with age. Over-watering and chemical fertilisers can cause them to rot. Clivias are frost tender, so grow them indoors or in cool glasshouses in cold climates. Dappled shade is best, but heavy shade will affect flowering. Plant mature plants in a thick layer of old compost, pine bark or aged mulch. They are excellent in large containers on a shady patio. Protection from direct sunlight is necessary as the foliage burns easily. Their natural habitat in South Africa is in humid and shady areas, but they will thrive in areas of dry summers and cool, wet winters. Once planted, clivias like to remain in the same place for many years.
