Crinum

The beautiful blooms pictured here are from the rare Crinum bulbispermum.
This spectacular and fragrant variety is just one of around 180 species of crinum. It is very easy to grow from enormous bulbs.

Originating from South Africa, some species are commonly called swamp lilies as they are found alongside rivers & streams. However they will happily grow in full sun in the hot areas of your garden, only requiring minimal maintenance.

This variety flowers in spring, and again in summer if the first flower stems are removed after the blooms fade. This prevents them from setting seed and so encourages more flowering. They are very hardy & don't need regular watering as the giant bulbs store moisture. The evergreen low-growing strappy foliage is attractive all year round.

It is possible to grow them from the seed, but takes many years for them to mature to flowering size. The mature bulbs are huge!
