“FOOLED ME” WINS TOP AWARD IN THE USA

 Fooled Me
, a stunning golden yellow with a red eye and edge, recently won the highest award given to a daylily by the member judges of the national daylily society in America - the American Hemerocallis Society (known throughout the daylily world as AHS). The award is called the Stout Silver Medal and to win it, a daylily must perform well in a large number of gardens in 15 States in theUSA. Unfortunately as it is a dormant variety it doesn’t perform as well for me as it does in many parts of the USA, or in the colder areas in the southern parts of Australia

These days, many of the highly acclaimed new daylilies have been bred from crosses made by breeders using expensive varieties, but Fooled Me is an exception.  Its breeder bought two un-
named $3 seedlings he liked from a friend in 1986 and made several crosses the following season.
The resulting seedlings from these crosses produced one that he described as “an outrageously coloured seedling”  which he wasn’t that fussed over. However, another friend told him to keep it because “gaudy sells.”

It is interesting to note that another “hot” coloured daylily - Primal Scream won the 2003 Stout Silver Medal , and the 2006 All American Award Winner  Mary’s Gold is another brilliant deep gold colour.  It looks like the American daylily lovers are being captivated by these bright colours. My own Booroobin Magic - a striking gold with a maroon eye and edge - has been selling very well in the USA ever since I introduced it in 1999.  I have made many crosses between Fooled Me and Booroobin Magic in the past but these crosses have failed to produce anything remarkable yet but I’ll keep trying.
