Did you know... ... a daylily is not a bulb? It is a hardy perennial that can flower for up to 6 months. ...when to plant daylilies? They can be planted all year round.
...how far apart to plant them from each other? No closer than 60-90cm is best.
...how much sun they require? Minimum 6 hours per day is required. Will tolerate dappled sunlight all day, but morning sun only in hot areas. ...how deep to plant daylilies? Just cover the crown & roots, then mulch to keep the soil cool & damp.
...how often to water daylilies? At planting time, water deeply. Then mulch, & water weekly.
...that you can plant daylilies in pots? Daylilies grow very well in large plastic pots, but are heavy feeders & will need fertilising each month & regular watering.
...when and what to use? Established plants should be fertilised with an organic fertiliser at least twice per year, in August &March.
...how often and when to break them up? This depends on how well you feed them & how vigorusly they grow. Check the size of the clump after three years and dig & divide if very large. Add lots of organic matter to the soil & replant into a new location.
...when daylilies flower? Flowering commences October in the subtropics & mid to late November in VIC, NSW, TAS, SA & some areas of WA. Flowering can last for 3 to 4 months. In many areas a re-bloom occurs in autumn.
...that daylilies are nature's own re-cyclers? When plants have finished flowering, cut off old stems, pull off dead leaves & use them as the plants own mulch. Daylilies continually grow new leaves in the centre & dispose of old leaves on the outside - recycling at its best!

Daylilies Daylilies are long flowering , colourful, hardy, drought resistant, frost resistant, easy care, low maintenance perennials. They can have tiny blooms, double blooms, huge single blooms, & fragrant blooms - and with good growing conditions, they can be pest & disease free. They are truly a wonderful perennial & are fast becoming one of the world’s most popular sun-loving flowering plants.
Worldwide popularity Gardeners all round the world are discovering the joys of growing daylilies. A single flower lasts only a day but today's new hybrid daylilies have a very long bloom season. An established clump can produce hundreds of blooms during a 4 to 6 month period each year - all with the minimum of care.
Oh so easy to grow! Most gardeners find them so easy to grow & have no problems growing them at all. All daylilies need is 5 to 7 hours of sun every day, lots of organic matter in the soil, a little water once a week, & a thick mulch of straw or hay. You can grow them in your perennial border, in pots on your patio, around the edges of ponds, on steep banks & even on the roadsides.
Daylily addiction ! A word of warning . . . . once you start growing daylilies, you could be hooked on them for ever! I must tell you about one of my customers who did a nice neighbourly thing one day. He saw his neighbour starting a new garden so he cut a few pieces off his clumps of daylilies & gave them to her. After telling her what they were he said, "If you can kill a daylily, you should give up gardening!" She followed his advice on how to plant & care for them & now she is another daylily addict. Like everyone else who grows daylilies for the first time, she couldn’t imagine that those tiny pieces would grow so fast & begin to flower in spring & through most of summer - only a couple of months after she planted them. Now she is addicted to daylilies & can't wait to order new varieties every time she receives one of my latest brochures !
