At
Mountain View Daylily Gardens, located in Queensland, Australia, I grow large numbers
of daylily cultivars & export them all round the
world. I believe I am the largest daylily nursery in
the Southern Hemisphere, & probably the largest daylily
nursery outside of the USA.
Blooming & booming in Queensland
I became hooked on daylilies back in 1976 when I
was teaching in a little country town in Queensland and
now I am a full time daylily nurseryman & a small time
hybridiser. I import the best new cultivars from the USA
& before long I have these exciting new plants to
sell. Our mild Maleny climate & high rainfall, together with
my organic growing methods, means that my plants are vigorous, and pest & disease free. When my customers
grow my daylilies, they are amazed at their rapid growth
& hardiness.
Organic methods,
healthy plants
I am almost fanatical about growing my daylilies
organically. I believe in the principle of creating a
healthy soil so that my plants are in excellent health.
My soil is tested at Brookside Laboratory in the USA and
the results are analysed by my advisors (Nutri-tech
Solutions) who are experts in organic fertilisers & organic horticulture. In addition to the fertiliser
blend that is prescribed to balance up the minerals in
the soil, I apply foliar sprays every three months. This
is made up of seaweed, fish, molasses, & liquid worm
castings. The daylilies respond so well to the organic
fertilisers & liquid foliar fertilisers that they
multiply very quickly. I have no need to spray for pests
& I do not have any plants die from so-called
“crown rot” (something that is prevalent when
growing daylilies using chemical fertilisers.

Hybridising
Hybridising towards perfection, I have a small
breeding programme & specialise in fragrant double
daylilies, small flowered cultivars, those really
“hot” colours, and eyed & edged cultivars.
My In Excess and Sweet Jeunesse are very
fragrant & very popular. Maleny
Debutante will remain my favourite daylily for many
years to come. In Maleny, it is a prolific rebloomer & often has over 40 buds on scapes with 5 way branching. I
consider it even more beautiful when grown in Florida at
David Kirchhoff’s, & at Clarence Crochet’s
nursery in Louisiana.
In Excess and Sweet Jeunesse also
have wonderful branching and a high bud count.
My latest introduction Booroobin Magic
(BOO-ROO-BIN) was truly a “magic” creation. I
did not expect such wide maroon edges on a first
generation cross of Witch's Wink & Admiral's
Braid. Now I have a parent that is producing some
stunning seedlings when crossed with cultivars such as
Jeff Salter’s Awesome Blossom &
Moonlit Masquerade.
